The SEU 800 can boost that they are the most democratic union there is, because the members of the administration, the controller, the members of the Executive Committee and the other members of the General Council are elected by the member delegates during the Unions’ Convention. There is no other position whose title is designated by the authorities except for those of the Unions’ employees.
The members
The members of the SEU 800 work within various businesses, called base units. The employees free chose by way of a majority to join our union by signing a valid membership card to which the SEU 800 was accredited to represent and to whom they pay their union dues.
The base unit Executive Committees
The members of each base unit elect a union executive. The number of people who are part of the executive and the role of each of those persons is defined within the Unions’ Constitution.
The main mandate of the base unit executive is to defend the interests of the members of their unit in front of the employer, administer the monies and other goods belonging to the members, represent the members of their unit in front of the Union authorities and participate in the implementation of the decisions by the Union authorities.
The divisions
The members of the SEU 800 are grouped together within five (5) divisions, according to the nature of activities of the employer. The Building Maintenance division is comprised mainly of the members working for companies within maintenance of public buildings, building owners, and other companies whose main activities are similar in nature. The School Boards and University division is comprised, as its name indicates, the school boards, schools, private colleges and universities. The Industry and Handling division is comprised of companies from the manufacturing sector (plastics, metal, wood, cardboard, milk products and others) and the companies doing handling. The Services, Commerce and Financial Institution division is comprised of companies within the hotel and restaurant business, the financial institution, the commercial businesses, care centres, golf clubs, transport, religious communities and others. The Utis division is comprises of companies within the textil industries and others.
Each division is represented at the General Council by an executive comprised of five people: a president, vice-president, secretary as well as three directors.
The main mandate a division’s executive is to have the
interests of the members from their division brought forward in front of the
Executive Committee and the General Council of the Union and to cooperate with
the implementation of the decisions of the Union authorities.

The Convention
The delegates are all members of the Union elected by the other members from within their base units or a grouping of base units, in accordance to the regulations determined by the Unions’ Constitution. Furthermore, the members of the General Council who are ending a mandate are appointed delegates with full rights at the Convention.
The delegates at the Convention decide the main orientations of the union, amend the Unions’ Constitution, decide the rate of the union dues and elect all of the members of the General Council of the Union (the divisions’ executives, Executive Committee, the members of the administration, the controller). The Convention is held every four (4) years.
The General Council
The General Council is comprised of thirty-four members of the Union, that is, three members of the administration (the President, the Vice-president to the administration and the Executive Vice-president), six members, of which is one president, for each of the five divisions, and a controller. The division Presidents are as such also Vice-Presidents of the Union.
The main mandate of the General Council is to oversee the propositions of the Convention that were conferred to them by the delegates, decide the general orientation of the Union between the Conventions, adopt the annual budge of the Union as well as the necessary amendments considered important and to ensure a general follow up. The General Council normally meets every three months.
The Executive Committee
The Executive Committee is comprised of eight members of the Union that is, the President, the Vice-president to the administration, the Executive Vice-president and the five Vice-Presidents.
The main mandate of the Executive Committee is to oversee the application and the interpretation of the Constitution of the Union, authorise the expenses, administer the goods of the Union and approve the hiring of personnel. The Executive Committee normally meets once a month.
The President
The President is mainly responsible for overseeing the proper running of the Union. He is the main spokesperson for the Union in front of all organizations, authorities or persons, signs the documents and the cheques of the Union, sits with full rights on all Union committees, presides the meetings of the Executive Committee and the General Council. He/she dedicates all of his working time to the exercise of these functions.
The Vice-president to the administration
The Vice-president to the administration is responsible for the administrative tasks arising from the activities of the Union, mainly the upkeep of the financial statements, the deposits of monies, the preparation and the respect of the annual budget, the signing of cheques. He/she dedicates all of his working time to the exercise of these functions.
The Executive Vice-presidente
The Executive Vice-president is responsible for the call of notice of the Executive Committee and the General Council meetings of the Union, for the upkeep of the minutes of the meetings of the authorities, of the upkeep of the archives, registers and justification pieces, the upkeep of the members list of the Union. He/she dedicates all of their working time to the exercise of these functions.
The Controller
The controller is responsible for regularly examining the books and the accounting records of the Union and to provide a report to the Executive Committee and the General Council. He/she does this examination at least once a month.
